WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE BEHAVIOR? Perhaps we need to re-think the mantra of "resolve" for the New Year? Is it time to concede that a resolution might not be enough when assessing one's evolution or improvement? I propose a revolution. How can we make serious change for the good in our lives? Does it take a revolt to modify behavior? What process is best for self-improvement? How much commitment and immersion does it take to grow? And can tennis be a platform for one's own growth? One personal revolution (among the many) I have for the new decade is to be more understanding of humanity. This requires coping skills. The good news about our society is it's easy to immerse oneself in this patient and understanding virtue. After living in NYC and its conveyor belt of efficiency I'm finding it can be hard to find satisfaction in the most mundane daily experiences. Miami as a culture does not move with the same inspiration as the Big Apple. Ah, the humanity of it all! TENNIS ANYONE? What does this have to do with tennis? Successful tennis players need great coping skills. After all, most rallies end in an unforced error (damn humanity). With all this failure in an athletic experience how does one keep coming back for more? I'm not sure I have the answer but I've been playing this sport since 1980. Thirty-years later I'm learning more about tennis and myself than I could have ever imagined. Happy New Year! I revolt to change. Tuesday, January 5

I snuck in a "pop quiz" with some of our students after class recently here in Miami Beach.
In some public tennis centers you might find there is quite a bit of noise, especially with traffic. This makes it difficult to audibly make calls for your opponent especially if you are running away from the action or have your back to the court as your chase your opponents shot. Check out the video below and discovery some tips on non verbal calls for tennis. |
